A SHORT CLUB HISTORY

Brighton Bowling Club (BBC) was established in 1881as a ‘men only’ club on land purchased at the north end of Male St, North Brighton. After several years tennis courts were added for younger members and ladies.

The club prospered, and during the 1930s a new enlarged clubhouse was built on the site, and a second green and more tennis courts were added.

As tennis became more popular, a Tennis Committee was formed, and the club built a separate clubhouse for tennis players. At our peak in the 1980s we had 8 RVBA Pennant sides and 5 tennis courts in regular use. In 1985 the club was Incorporated as Brighton Bowling & Tennis Club Inc. (BBTCI), with a Board of Management, a Bowls Section (BBC), and a Tennis Section (Brighton Tennis Club – BTC). In 1999 lady bowlers were admitted, with their own Brighton Ladies Bowling Club (BLBC) as a separate Section.

During the 1990s club membership declined, and the Board planned to sell the Male St. property and establish a brand new facility on Council land. Dendy Park Bowling Club was struggling at the time to survive, and in 2003 amalgamated with BBTCI, with the intention that their club would become the site of our new development.

Unfortunately the BTC refused to agree to a move to Dendy Park. Following resolution of the dispute, the Male St. land was sub-divided to separate the tennis courts, so the bowling area could be sold. The BTC resigned from the club, and we changed our name to BBSCI. The move to Dendy Park took place in July 2007, and construction of the new facilities commenced in February 2009, with completion scheduled for the start of the 2009/2010 bowling season.
